Community Spirit & Service

Joe Vinson isn’t just a candidate for District 4; he is a product of it. Raised in Cordova Park and East Hill, he grew up playing in “Cowboy Park” and Bayview Park and swimming in Bayou Texar.

The son of federal judge Roger Vinson and longtime Cordova Park Elementary teacher Ellen Vinson, Joe grew up with a profound respect for public service and the community that shaped him. His Eagle Scout project was replanting sea oats on Pensacola Beach after Hurricanes Erin and Opal, and he has continued to serve his community—as a Rotarian, as a board member for multiple nonprofit organizations, and as a past president of his church.

Joe and wife Bradley, a librarian, have been married for 22 years with three amazing children, all of them educated in Escambia County public schools. He is a lead organizer of cultural events like the Japanese New Year Celebration and participates in the local arts community.

Love of Local History

Joe started his career at the Appleyard Agency, where he caught the history bug from agency founder John Appleyard. He founded the Pensapedia wiki in 2006 and received a master’s degree in public history from the University of West Florida. His social media videos on a variety of local historical topics have garnered thousands of followers on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Among his many other public history projects:

  • Researched and designed the historical timeline murals in the Bayview Community Resource Center
  • Co-wrote the historical interpretive signage at Bruce Beach
  • Participated in the “Carpenters Creek Connected” oral history project
  • Developed the 1821 Sampler website used for the Florida Territorial Bicentennial, recognized by the National Genealogical Society
  • Created the “Lost Pensacola” project remembering lost Pensacola landmarks through vintage posters, recognized by the Florida Historical Society
  • Co-edited the “Righting the Past” historical obituary project published in the Pensacola News Journal, now a manuscript under contract for publication
  • Developed the 1776 Sampler website for the America 250 celebration

Different Kind of Candidate

Joe is running as a no party affiliation (NPA) candidate. For Joe, this isn’t a strategic pivot—it’s a lifelong philosophy. Having registered as an independent at age 18, he agrees with George Washington that partisan identity politics “tend to render alien to each other those who ought to be bound together by fraternal affection.”

Joe believes that local government is most effective when it focuses on shared goals rather than party divisions. His experience as a citizen journalist and policy wonk—holding local government accountable through his website, Pensacola Digest—prepared him to be a candidate driven by a desire for transparency, rigor, and honesty.

Joe Vinson is ready to bring an analytical mind, a historian’s perspective, and a neighbor’s heart to the Escambia County Commission. He is committed to clean, open government and ensuring that the county’s future is as bright as the history he has spent his life preserving.
